Mediterranean Magic in Malta

This lovely island, fringed by clusters of tiny castaway islands like its own Mediterranean solar system, is marooned out to sea off the south coast of Italy. Take a day out of your busy sunbathing schedule to enjoy Valletta’s fortified city walls and cobbled streets, discover its historic castles and take time to explore its lovely rambling alleyways, fringed with designer boutiques and cheerful pavement cafes.

It’s easy to let the hours slip by on a trip to Valletta. It’s packed with fascinating sights and soul-stirring views. Much of the city juts out into the Mediterranean on a peninsula with a lovely harbour, which affords wonderful views of beaches, craggy cliffs and seascapes. On top of that, it offers some quite spectacular architecture and plenty of historic structures including St John’s Co-Cathedral and Fort St Elmo. Its military past and moving tales of battle bravery are also brought to life in the form of the War Rooms and the National War Museum.

Away from the capital, another fantastic day trip is by boat, exploring the many tiny islands and communities that make up the Maltese archipelago. Gozo is well worth a visit, as is the smaller island of Comino, both of which afford beautiful beaches and a laid-back lifestyle that makes for a superb day out.
